Slackware 12 RC 1

Slackware 12 (I expected another 11.x version) RC 1 arrived just in time for summer. This is the perfect time for all you early adopters to try out the latest version of Slack with minimal instability. If you plan on upgrading to Slackware-Current please read the UPGRADE.TXT first and don’t forget to make a BACKUP.

Some of the more exciting changes in Slackware 12 are:

  • k3b getting merged into the KDE package series from /extra
  • kernel version 2.6 is now the default
  • Xfce 4.4 🙂
  • Dbus and HAL (without PAM)
  • wpa_supplicant
  • Compiz (a very interesting addition)

For a complete list of changes please see the ChangeLog.

That’s great news. I haven’t been paying as much attention to Slackware 12 as I would have wanted. I’m glad Patrick Volkerding finally made 2.6 kernel the default kernel. No more upgrading from 2.4. Also note worthy additions include HAL and DBUS, with an HAL-enabled KDE.

Sorry about that, I’ve been on the road and haven’t been able to post. I’ll get right on it.
